Day 17: Green

I have a history of loving my indoor plants too much. Maybe it's not all my fault, but the plants in my care don't seem to hang around for long. Since it was cheaper to buy a whole basil plant than it was to buy a pre cut bunch, I obviously went for the fresh plant. So here he is (yes, he. I have named him Mr. Basil), sitting in a pot on my desk where there is the most sunshine.

Let's see how long I can keep him alive for!

Day 11: Someone you talked to today

Someone I talk to not just today but most days is my sister Nadja. Although not too far away (she lives in London), we still don't see each other as much as we'd like to. Skype is our best friend.

Day 10: Loud

The Frenchman had musical inclinations the other day and pulled out his old electric guitar. He hooked it up to our surround sound amplifier and he's been practicing most nights ever since. It's been loud, but fun when I can actually recognise some of the tunes he plays. The signatures you see on the body are those of Rammstein (!) when they toured through Paris a few years ago. Cool, huh!

Day 9: Red

Brighton has a pretty good bus system with good links through out the city and beyond. It is easily accessible by train from other cities and towns nearby.

On the downside, the bus fares are quite expensive, £1.70 per ride no matter how many stops you go. A monthly pass is more than what you would pay for a monthly pass for the Metro in Paris. Go figure.

That said, you'll find them everywhere in Brighton and Hove. Make sure you look both ways before crossing as they come thundering down the street at top speed. The drivers are pretty heavy on the gas!

Day 8: Window

One thing I have noticed that happens a lot in Brighton is the amount of windows being smashed. On my frequent walks, I have seen a fair share of shattered shop fronts or bus stops.

In the case of the photo above, this shop has been fought over for many months now with squatters and police alternatively taking possession. The rightful owners finally evicted them but not soon enough to save the shop from damage.

Day 7: Something You Wore

My favourite purchase (and one of the most useful) of 2011 are my coveted Cath Kidston wellington boots. Keeping my feet nice and dry, not to mention comfortable, I wore these out and about today.

Day 6: 5pm

This is the clock tower that most people coming from the train station into central Brighton will see. It is a cool part of the city and I'm glad to share it with you.

For a little history, according to Wikipedia:

"The Brighton Clock Tower or Jubilee Clock Tower, located at the junction of West Street and Queens Road, Brighton, England, was built in 1888 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. The clock carries portraits of the Queen, Prince Albert and their son, the future Edward VII, and his wife. Above the clock is a gilt copper sphere, a time ball that once rose up a mast every hour and fell on the hour. The mechanism is no longer in use because of noise complaints from local residents.

The tower is made of pink granite and limestone, with limestone figures at each corner, and medallion mosaics of Victoria, Albert and the Prince and Princess of Wales. It was renovated in 2002."

Day 5: Smile

Not the best quality photo (not to mention, what's going on with my hair?!) but it was too cute not to post.

Day 3: Your Neighbourhood

This is my 'hood. Since it was too cold outside (and gloomy), I took it through the window which gave it a nice effect. See, I can always justify my laziness.

You can just make out the horizon in the background and the tiny burnt out pier just beneath if you've got a keen eye and know what to look for.

Brighton and Hove are full of Regency-style townhouses. I love the era and there are some really good examples dotted around town and some not-so-nice modern monstrosities like you can see in the top right corner of the window.

Day 2: Fruit

This was taken in front of a popular Brighton exotic grocery store and asian foods supermarket, Taj.

They always have displays of fresh fruit and vegetables spilling right on to the pavement, tempting shoppers inside. If your looking for something exotic, you should be able to find it here!

Day 1: Up

I love the cool lighting of the ceiling taken on the top level ("Upper Mall" level) in the Churchill Square Shopping Centre, here in central Brighton.

I come here often and as shopping malls go, and it's got most of your basic British high street stores. Sadly a few stores have closed during the last couple of months and they remain dark and empty.

March Photo A Day

This month I want to publish my Photo-A-Day for March, here on the blog.

February's attempt (yes, attempt) was hit and miss, so I want to share my daily photos here so that I can schedule the ones in advance when I know I can't get to it on the day.

So here goes...
